As a heating engineer, from June 2022, it is a requirement that new boilers and heating systems installed in both new and existing homes have been cleaned and protected in line with BS7593:2019.

The number one cause of central heating failure is poor water quality. Help your customers increase the efficiency of their boilers, shrink energy bills and reduce the cost of their repairs in the future by complying with regulations and best practice for installation.

To cut CO2 emissions from our homes and further protect the environment, Part L – Conservation of Fuel and Power has been updated by UK Building Regulations. When fitting any new boilers or similar heating appliances, water treatment is now mandatory.

In simple terms, the new regulations are as follows:

Prior to commissioning

  • You will need to carry out a chemical clean and freshwater flush to lift up the debris within the heating system.

During commissioning

  • After finishing the clean, an in-line filter will need to be fitted to all systems, with existing filters cleaned and serviced as part of commissioning.
  • During the last freshwater fill, chemical inhibitors should be added and allowed to circulate.
  • In low temperature and cooling systems, Biocide is a requirement – it can also be a consideration for high temperature systems for added protection during downtime.

After commissioning

  • Test the level of inhibitor and cleanliness of the system by performing a water test.
  • Every five years, check that the water is clean and balanced by completing a full system water test or re-dosing the inhibitor.
  • Prove compliance by completing the certification through the dedicated Benchmark app.
