Fence Rail FAQs:

Q: What size are your fence rails?

A: Our standard fence rails are typically:

  • 3.6m long - the most common length for post and rail fencing.

  • 38mm x 87mm or 47mm x 75mm sections - the standard sizes for garden and agricultural rails.

We can help you choose the right size depending on your job.

Q: How far apart should fence posts and rails be?

A: For post and rail fencing:

  • Posts are usually spaced about 1.8m to 2.4m (6–8ft) apart.

  • Rails are fixed horizontally to posts at evenly spaced intervals depending on the number of rails - typically 2 or 3 rails per bay.

This setup provides strength and a tidy finish.

Q: What is the purpose of a fence top rail?

A: A fence top rail adds strength to the top of the fence run, helping to keep posts aligned and reducing movement over time. It also helps protect the fence from sagging or damage.

Q: Do I need treated rails for outdoor fencing?

A: Yes - all of our fence rails are pressure treated to help protect against rot and insect attack, making them suitable for outdoor use in all conditions.

Q: Do you offer delivery for fence rails?

A: Yes - we deliver fence rails, posts and all related materials across the UK. You can order online for home or site delivery, or contact your local JT Atkinson branch to arrange bulk orders.
