Oil Boiler FAQs:

Q: What are the different types of oil boilers?

A: In the UK, oil heating systems generally fall into three categories:

We stock all three to suit different household setups. We also offer gas boilers if you have access to gas mains supplies.

Q: What’s the difference between internal and external oil boilers?

A: Internal oil boilers are fitted indoors, usually in a utility room or kitchen. External oil boilers are housed in weatherproof cases and installed outside the property - a popular choice for freeing up indoor space or when ventilation and flueing options are limited. We stock both options, with external models designed for durability and quiet operation.

Q: Are external oil boilers noisy?

A: Modern external oil boilers are designed to run quietly. While you may notice some operational noise during firing, modern outdoor units are engineered to minimise it. If you're concerned about sound, placement and base preparation can also help reduce noise transmission.

Q: How do oil boilers work?

A: Oil boilers use heating oil as fuel to heat water for central heating and hot water. The system draws oil from an external tank, burns it in a combustion chamber, and heats water via a heat exchanger.

  • In regular (heat only) setups, hot water is stored in a cylinder.

  • In system boilers, hot water is stored too, but key components like the pump and expansion vessel are built in.

Oil boilers are ideal for rural homes or properties off the gas grid.

Q: How much does a new oil boiler cost?

A: New oil boilers typically cost from £1,000 to £3,000+, depending on size, brand and whether it’s an internal or external unit. Installation costs will vary based on system layout, oil tank requirements and heating controls.

Q: What’s the lifespan of an oil boiler?

A: With regular servicing, a quality oil boiler can last 15 to 20 years. External models should be protected from debris and vegetation, while annual servicing helps keep any oil-fired system running efficiently and safely.

Q: Are oil boilers being phased out?

A: There are no immediate plans to ban oil boilers, but government regulations are evolving. Off-grid properties can still install oil boilers under current rules, and modern oil-fired models are more efficient and lower in emissions than older systems. It's worth reviewing any updates to Building Regulations if you're planning a new installation.

Q: Can I install an oil boiler myself?

A: No - oil boiler installations must be carried out by a qualified OFTEC-registered engineer. This ensures the system is safe, compliant with UK building regulations, and meets manufacturer requirements. Never attempt to fit an oil boiler yourself.

Q: What oil boiler parts and accessories do you stock?

A: We stock a full range of oil boiler parts and equipment for a complete set-up, including:

Q: Do you deliver oil boilers and parts?
