Gas Combi Boiler FAQs:

Q: What is a gas combi boiler?

A: A gas combi boiler (short for ‘combination boiler’) is a compact unit that provides both heating and hot water from one appliance. It heats water directly from the mains - so there's no need for a separate cylinder or tank. That makes it ideal for smaller homes or properties where space is tight. They’re particularly popular as they provide instant hot water, which makes them more energy efficient as only the hot water you need is heated, and far more practical as you won’t ‘run-out’ of hot water like can happen with other boiler types that rely on a hot water tank being replenished.

Q: Do combi boilers use gas or electricity?

A: Combi boilers typically run on natural gas, though LPG combi boilers are also available for off-grid homes. Some electric combi boilers do exist, but they’re less common and often more expensive to run. All gas boilers require electricity to power components like the pump and controls. You can also get oil combi boilers that rely on oil tanks.

Q: Are gas combi boilers being phased out in the UK?

A: Gas boilers aren’t being banned outright, but from 2025, new-build homes will no longer be fitted with them as part of the UK’s net-zero plan. If you already have a gas boiler, you can continue using and replacing it. For off-grid homes, LPG combi boilers remain a practical choice.

Q: What is the difference between a compact and standard combi boiler?

A: Compact combi boilers are smaller units designed to fit in kitchen cupboards or tight spaces, making them ideal for flats or small homes. Standard combis offer higher flow rates and are suited to properties with multiple bathrooms or higher hot water demands; they require more space for installation.

Q: Can I install my own combi boiler?

A: No, gas combi boilers must be installed by a Gas Safe registered engineer in the UK. Fitting one yourself is illegal and unsafe. If you need installation support or advice on selecting a boiler, your local JT Atkinson branch can help connect you with trusted tradespeople.

Q: What’s the best gas combi boiler for my home?

A: That depends on your property size, hot water demand and budget. For small to medium homes, a 24kW–30kW combi boiler usually offers the right balance of efficiency and performance. Speak to our team or check product specs for flow rates, warranty info and energy ratings.

Q: Do you stock LPG gas combi boilers?

A: No, we don't stock LPG combi boilers but we can supply them within 1-2 days. LPG boilers are ideal for homes that aren’t connected to the mains gas grid. We also stock a range of boiler conversion kits that can be used to convert some gas combi boilers into LPG boilers when needed. This work does require an official Gas Safe registered engineer to carry out the conversion. Many natural gas boilers are LPG ready and only need to be set up correctly by the installer.

Q: Can I get gas combi boilers delivered?

A: Yes, we offer UK-wide delivery on all gas combi boilers and accessories. You can order online for direct-to-site delivery or collect from your local JT Atkinson branch.
