Fence Cap FAQs:

Q: What types of fence capping do you offer?

A: We stock:

  • Fence capping rails - designed to fit along the top of close board and panel fences, protecting the exposed board ends from weather damage.

  • Fence post caps - available in flat or shaped styles, they sit on top of fence posts to help prevent water ingress and rot.

Both options come in treated timber, including brown and green finishes, and are designed to match common fence sizes.

Q: What does a capping rail do?

A: A capping rail protects the top of your fence from the elements, helping prevent water getting into the end grain of the boards. It also adds strength to the fence line and gives a neat, finished look.

Q: What size are fence post caps?

A: Our standard post caps are designed to fit 100mm x 100mm (4x4 inch) posts. Always check your post size before ordering, as larger posts may need a custom or larger cap.

Q: Are your fence post caps treated?

A: Yes - all of our timber post caps are pressure treated for longer life. Brown and green options are available to match your fence finish and help protect against rot.

Q: How do I fit fence post caps?

A: Position the cap on top of the post and secure it with exterior-grade screws or nails. You can also add a bead of exterior wood adhesive for extra hold. Drill a pilot hole first to avoid splitting the timber.

Q: Do I need fence capping on every fence?

A: It’s not essential, but fitting capping rails or post caps will extend the life of your fence. They help keep moisture out of vulnerable areas and reduce the risk of rot setting in over time.

Q: Do you offer delivery for fence capping and post caps?

A: Yes - we deliver capping rails, post caps, and all related fencing materials across the UK. Order online for home or site delivery, or contact your local JT Atkinson branch for larger orders.
