Q: Are your timber fence posts treated?

A: Yes - most of our timber fence posts are tanalised (pressure treated) to help resist rot, decay and insect damage. They’re suitable for direct ground contact when installed properly, but metal post fence supports and concrete fence bases can extend their longevity. 

Q: How long do timber fence posts last?

A: When properly treated and installed, timber fence posts can last 10–15 years or more. Using base panels, fence capping, and good drainage around the base helps extend their life.

Q: What size timber fence post should I use?

A: As a guide:

• 75 x 75mm posts - for lighter panels or decorative fencing.

• 100 x 100mm posts - for close board fencing, higher panels or where strength is key.

Q: How deep should timber fence posts be set?

A: Set posts at least one-third of their total length into the ground. For example, for a 6ft fence height, use a 9ft post, with 3ft below ground. Use concrete or post mix to secure, and check posts are level as you go.

Q: How far apart should timber fence posts be?

A: For standard panels, posts are set 1.83m (6ft) apart centre-to-centre. This matches the width of most fence panels for a secure fit.

Q: Should I choose timber or concrete fence posts?

A: Timber posts blend in naturally and are easier to work with if cutting or shaping is needed. Concrete posts last longer and require less maintenance, especially in wet or exposed areas. The choice comes down to look, budget, and how much maintenance you want to do.
