EnquireOur general plasterboard is a reliable all-rounder for walls, ceilings and partitioning jobs. Easy to cut, handle and fix, it’s a go-to choice for everything from routine repairs to full refits. Whether you’re tackling a DIY project or working to a tight schedule on-site, these general plasterboards provide solid performance and a clean finish every time. If you’re looking for plasterboards that meet specific criteria, we also offer acoustic plasterboards, fire-resistant plasterboards, moisture-resistant and insulated boards.
Q: What is general purpose plasterboard?
A: General-purpose plasterboard is a versatile wallboard that can be used for most internal walls and ceilings where standard fire, acoustic, and moisture performance is acceptable. It can be taped and jointed or finished with a skim coat of plaster depending on the level of finish you’re after.
Q: What sizes and thicknesses are available in general plasterboards?
A: We stock a variety of sizes to suit different jobs:
Standard Boards – typically 2400mm x 1200mm, ideal for covering larger areas.
Smaller Sizes – such as 1800mm x 900mm, easier to handle in tighter spaces or on smaller jobs.
Thickness Options – usually available in 9.5mm and 12.5mm, depending on the structural or acoustic needs of the space.
You’ll find board size and thickness clearly listed across our range, making it easy to choose what you need.
Q: Where can I use general-purpose plasterboard?
A: It’s suitable for most internal spaces – ceilings, stud walls, partitions, and drylining – but shouldn’t be used in areas with high moisture like bathrooms or utility rooms. For those areas, go for moisture resistant boards instead.
Q: Can I decorate directly onto general-purpose plasterboard?
A: Yes, you can paint or wallpaper straight onto it once it’s been taped, filled, and sealed with a primer. If you’re aiming for a particularly clean and smooth finish – especially in high-traffic areas – a skim coat of plaster on top of the plasterboard is recommended.
Q: Do I need to skim general plasterboard before decorating?
A: Not always – it depends on the finish you want. For a basic job, jointing and sanding might be enough. For a more seamless or durable surface, particularly in well-lit feature areas where imperfections will be obvious, a full skim will give the best result.
Q: Do you offer delivery for general purpose plasterboard?
A: Yes – we can deliver plasterboard direct to site or to your home, and we’ve got the right equipment to handle larger orders safely. Just select your preferred option at checkout or get in touch with your local JT Atkinson branch for advice on bulk orders.
