Fire Plasterboard FAQs:

Q: What is fire resistant plasterboard?

A: Fire-resistant plasterboard – also called fire-rated or fireproof plasterboard – is made to slow the spread of fire. It’s reinforced with materials like glass fibre, which helps the board hold up under high temperatures, giving you more time for evacuation and helping to protect structural areas of the building.

Q: What types of fire plasterboard do you offer?

A: We stock a range of fire-rated plasterboards for different job types, including:

Q: Where should I use fire-rated plasterboard?

A: Fire plasterboard is typically used in areas where building regulations require extra fire protection, such as:

  • Garages and integral garages.

  • Ceilings under habitable rooms.

  • Stairwells, corridors and escape routes.

  • Party walls between homes or flats.

It’s always worth checking your building plans to make sure you’re using the plasterboard in the right place.

Q: How does fire plasterboard differ from standard plasterboard?

A: Fire-rated plasterboard is denser and built to last longer under high temperatures. While general purpose plasterboard will start to break down fairly quickly in a fire, fire-rated boards are designed to hold out for a set time – typically 30 or 60 minutes – depending on thickness and installation. Most of our fire boards come with a pink face to make them easy to identify on site.

Q: What fire ratings do your plasterboards have?

A: We stock fire-resistant plasterboards with two key classifications:

  • A1 fire rating – This is the highest rating of fire resistance given to construction materials like plasterboards, meaning the board is non-combustible and will not ignite, burn, or produce significant smoke even at temperatures over 750°C. It’s suitable for high-risk areas where flame spread must be minimised.

  • Thermal F Class rating – This indicates the board also provides thermal protection under fire conditions, helping to slow heat transfer and protect surrounding materials. It’s commonly used where both fire safety and insulation are important, such as boiler rooms or escape routes.

Both types are designed to support fire-resistant constructions when used as part of a tested system. Always refer to the product spec and building regulations to ensure the board meets your required fire performance level.

Q: Can I use fire plasterboard in kitchens and bathrooms?

A: Yes – if you're working in a damp or humid space, go for our moisture resistant fire boards. They offer the same level of fire protection but with added resistance to steam, water and humidity, making them ideal for kitchens, bathrooms or utility rooms. Ensure the boards are properly sealed at joints and well ventilated to get the best performance.

Q: Do you offer delivery on fire plasterboard?

A: Yes, we offer delivery services across the UK and can supply everything you need – from plasterboards and fixings to tape and adhesive. Whether you’re ordering a few sheets or a full load for site delivery, we’ll help you get the materials there when you need them.
