Plasterboard Fixing FAQs:

Q: What types of plasterboard fixings do you offer?

A: We stock a full range of fixings for plasterboard jobs, including:

  • Plasterboard Screws – ideal for securing boards to timber or metal plaster studs.

  • Wall Plugs – best for lightweight fittings when there’s no stud behind.

  • Rawl Plugs – designed for medium weight fixings in hollow walls.

  • Heavy-Duty Anchors and Toggles – for secure fixings when strength matters.

Whatever you’re working on, we’ve got the right fixing for the job.

Q: When should I use plasterboard screws instead of wall plugs?

A: Use plasterboard screws when you’re fitting boards directly to studwork. They give a tight, secure hold and are specifically made for that job. Wall plugs are used when you’re fixing something onto plasterboard, not through it – especially when there’s no stud behind.

Q: What are the best fixings for heavy items on plasterboard?

A: For shelves, wall cabinets or heavier fittings, go for:

  • Cavity wall anchors.

  • Spring toggles.

  • Metal self-drill fixings.

These spread the load behind the board and help prevent pull-through.

Q: Can I use rawl plugs in plasterboard?

A: Yes – but only the right type. We stock rawl plugs designed for hollow walls, which expand to grip the back of the plasterboard. They’re a good choice for medium weight items where you don’t have access to a stud.

Q: Do you offer plasterboard fixings for metal studs?

A: We do - plasterboard screws are made for metal studwork. They’re quick to drive in and give a strong hold, without stripping the metal.

Q: Are self-drilling plasterboard fixings available?

A: Yes – we stock self-drilling and hammer-in fixings that save time on site. They’re ideal for lightweight jobs like hooks, mirrors, or fittings where you don’t want to pre-drill.

Q: How do I know which plasterboard fixing to choose?

A: It depends on three things:

  • What you’re fixing – light, medium or heavyweight.

  • Where you’re fixing – into a stud or hollow wall.

  • Board thickness – match the fixing to the job.

If you’re not sure, give us a call or pop into your local JT Atkinson branch – we’ll point you in the right direction.

Q: What sizes of plasterboard screws and fixings do you stock?

A: We carry a wide range of sizes to suit standard and thicker boards. Whether you need short screws for a quick patch job or longer fixings for double-boarded walls, we’ve got you covered.
