Q: What types of wood treatment do you stock?

Q: What’s the difference between timber treatment and wood preservative?

A: They’re often used interchangeably, but generally:

• Timber treatment refers to any product that restores wood from insect, fungal, or water damage.

• Wood preservative treatment is specifically designed to prevent rot, mould, and insect attack, and is often used on exterior wood

If your timber is untreated, you should always use a preservative treatment on it before exposing it to the outdoor elements. 

Q: What is Creocote, and how is it used?

A: Creocote is a modern alternative to traditional creosote. It offers deep penetration and water repellence for fences, posts, and sheds. It’s available in light brown and dark brown and is suitable for timber that’ll be outdoors. You can apply it using a brush, a garden sprayer, or by dipping the wood.

Q: What wood treatments are best for garden furniture?

A: The right treatment depends on the type of timber and the finish you’re after. Here’s a quick guide:

• Hardwood furniture: Use Ronseal Teak Oil to revive colour, nourish the timber, and protect against cracking and weathering. It soaks deep into hardwood and enhances the natural grain.

• Softwood furniture: Treat with a clear wood preservative to guard against rot, then follow with a protective topcoat like a furniture oil or exterior-grade timber stain if you want to add colour.

• Weathered or grey timber: Start with a garden furniture restorer to clean and brighten the surface. Once dry, apply a wood oil to protect and enhance the appearance.

• Furniture in sunny spots: For added UV protection, use a UV protection oil like Osmo UV Protection Oil, which helps prevent fading, splitting and swelling.

• Rattan Furniture: Use a specialist rattan reviver like the Azpects EasyCare Rattan Revive 3-in-1. This can be used on rattan, PVC, plastic and wood - it’s designed to clean, restore and protect furniture. 

Whatever product you choose, always apply to clean, dry timber and follow the tin for drying times and reapplication advice.

Q: How long does wood treatment last?

A: This depends on the type of treatment and what the timber is exposed to. Most exterior wood treatments last between 1–2 years, while some interior preservatives last much longer. Regular inspection and reapplication will keep timber protected year-round.

Q: How do I apply wood treatment?

A: Always follow the instructions on the tin – some products require two coats or a primer depending on the surface.

1. Clean and dry the wood thoroughly

2. Remove old coatings or paint if needed

3. Apply with a brush or low-pressure sprayer

4. Work into joints and end grain where water can soak in

5. Let it dry fully and apply extra coats as required
