Q: What is the gravel calculator and how does it work?

A: Our gravel calculator is a simple tool to help you work out how much gravel you’ll require for your job. Just enter the length, width, and depth of the area you’re covering, and the calculator will give you the quantity you’ll need in tonnes. It’s designed to take the guesswork out of ordering and reduce waste on site.

Q: How do I know how much gravel I need?

A: Use the calculator to input your area’s measurements. For most paths, driveways or garden borders, a depth of around 50mm (5cm) is typical. For driveways or areas with heavier traffic, you might need up to 75mm. Once entered, you’ll get an instant estimate of how many tonnes of gravel to order.

Q: What depth of gravel should I use?

A: That depends on the job:

• Paths and Decorative Borders: around 40–50mm.

• Driveways or Parking Areas: 50–75mm depending on traffic.

• Base Layers Under Paving: around 100mm of MOT Type 1 followed by your finish layer.

Make sure the ground is compacted and level before laying gravel for the best result.

Q: Does gravel size affect coverage?

A: Yes - finer gravels like 10mm spread more evenly and sit closer together, so you might need slightly less. Larger grades like 20mm leave more air gaps, so you may require a bit more to get full coverage. The calculator gives a good average based on standard 20mm gravel.
